Art Show Opens Tomorrow at Dunn Bros.

Thanks to my sweet family, my art is hung and ready for tomorrow’s First Friday Art Walk in Bemidji, MN.  My husband and son attached hanging hardware and two of my kids helped me hang the show today.

If you’re in the Bemidji area, I’d love for you to join us tomorrow evening, July 1st, from 5-7pm at Dunn Bros.  My friends Sonja Connell and Jay Carlsgaard will be providing musical entertainment, as Sonja plays cello and her dad accompanies on piano.  Their music is wonderful!

Thanks for reading.  Have a safe and happy weekend.

Stars and Stripes Forever

This piece was inspired by love for my country as well as Independence Day, which is right around the corner.  God bless the USA.

Dunn Bros Art Show Reception

The show is hung and the party’s done!  Many thanks to all the family and friends who attended last night and made it such a special evening.  It reinforced that the best thing about art is community!

To begin, the weather was beautiful for this time of year in Northern Minnesota!

Evening winding down, just a few guests remaining

Thanks again to everyone who attended last night.  Sonja, Jay and I were overwhelmed by the support of our friends and community, and their music made the evening all the more wonderful!  My art will be at Dunn Bros, Bemidji through December 30th for local friends who couldn’t be there.

Have a great weekend,

Melanie

“My Favorite Things” – December Art Show

Yesterday was December 1st.  I always love the first day of a new month because it reminds me that life is full of new beginnings, and this month that idea was particularly welcome!

With three teenage children, life is always busy.  Last month was particularly busy as I was preparing for my December art show at our local Dunn Bros coffee shop.  Yesterday was installation day, so I wanted to share a few pictures, as well as a couple pieces that I’ve not yet featured on my blog.

“Fibonacci’s Elephant” – 12x18in mixed media collage. 18x24in framed

I created “Fibonacci’s Elephant” this past summer after reading about the many ways the Fibonacci pattern, also known as the golden ratio, occurs in nature.  The symbolism of the elephant was also deeply inspiring to me.

“Quilted” – 12x12in mixed media collage, 17x17in framed

I created this piece after reading a book about the quilters of Gee’s Bend.  One artist friend commented that it looks a bit like Russian Constructivism.  This piece contains vintage fabric, hand-painted papers as well as vintage paper and sheet music.

Since the art featured in this show is a compilation over several months and didn’t have a single, unifying theme, I chose to call the show “My Favorite Things”.  The show is up through December 30th at Dunn Bros, Bemidji, MN, with an artist reception this Friday, December 5th from 5-7pm.  Music generously provided by my good friend, cellist, Sonja Connell and her accompanist/father, Jay Carlsgaard.  I hope local friends can attend.

Thanks for visiting my blog.  I hope your December is off to a great start, too!
